Lapis lazuli is a metamorphic rock containing silicates from the feldspathoid group. Its use is very old, dating back 7,000 years.

It is mainly known as ornamental stone, opaque, blue in colour, between azure and ultramarine (“French ultramarine” for Anglophones), and has uses mainly in jewellery, decoration and painting. During Roman times, the lapis was known as an aphrodisiac.
